Why Flood Occur?

Its flood time. We are said to be facing one of the worst floods we have seen since 50 years or so. Somebody asked me whether I am affected by it or not. It’s funny that I had asked the same question to that person a week ago, when I read of floods in that country.

Then this question came,

"why floods occur?”

Simply put, it is because there exists a phenomenon called flood in this planet and it’s in nature’s nature to call it as and when she feels to do so (using 'natural' causes). But is that the only reason why it floods? Don’t we have to do anything with it? Should we always blame the nature?

One of the main culprits for floods in cities is garbage and poor drainage system. Even if there is a drainage system, when it gets clogged, it becomes useless. From where does this garbage come? People with no civic sense are most responsible for it. They throw everything everywhere; the worst is when that litter happens to be plastic.

I saw some TV ads by the government, using celebrities, asking the people to not to litter. Yes, that is from where we should start to avoid man-made floods. We dug up all the sand from the rivers and dump it up with garbage. Day after day trees are just disappearing…It’s natural for a river to flood during heavy rain days. Even though people know this, they encroach near riverbanks to add up to causalities and disasters. (I read about recent deaths in connection with flood (and H1N1), but not even a single politician died !) When will people ever learn?

Many a times, instead of doing sow and reap, it looks like what we do with nature is sow and rape…
